What role do Business Analysts play in the IT industry?
The role of the business analyst may differ depending on the complexity of the projects carried out in the IT sector, but when we look at its essence, business analysts play a major role in understanding and solving complexity.
If I’m going to make an analogy, think of a tangled ball of rope, your client is delivering this complex ball to your hand. You need to open the strings of rope one by one and turn it into a smooth ball, otherwise, for the people tasked with the development, it is going to be meaningless, difficult to understand, and will cause them to make mistakes. If you deliver the rope as a smooth ball, developers will be able to provide a better quality of work and will spend less time. However, your work does not end here. For example, in the knitting process, you need to catch the missing motives and arrange them. You must do this by comparing a work done with the sample motif that the customer sent you. The reason for doing this is to catch the overlooked mistakes and deliver the product in an almost problem-free manner. The main reason I say almost problem-free is that no matter how perfect you try to do something, there is always a chance that there will be a small error.
After briefly summarizing the role of a business analyst, let’s talk about who can be a business analyst.
This area of work generally requires knowledge of statistics. A business analyst with statistical software and SQL skills is always the preferred candidate.
Skill and training requirements may vary by employer, specific role, and sector. If you are going to be a business analyst in the IT sector, it will be useful for you to know the algorithm structure at least at the basic level. Having basic knowledge about the functioning will facilitate both your work and the work of the developer team to ensure that it is progressing correctly when you are guiding the developer team.
In addition to these, one of the most important things that you need to take into account is that it is necessary to master all the basics of the work done such as budgeting, cost-benefit analysis charts, variety analysis, customer relations, and more.
After briefly explaining the role of the business analyst, let’s briefly examine what personal skills they should have.
The most important characteristic that I think a business analyst should have is the ability to manage crisis moments and approach problems with a solution focus, not chaos. Sometimes the exact cause of the problem is not known, and a crisis is created to solve it, and in such moments, it takes clear thinking and certain creativity to understand problems in a way that leads to a satisfactory solution.
I think the complex work of a Business Analyst requires excellent organizational and time management skills. The days and weeks of a Business Analyst are always different. Keeping your own business life and the business life of the team you work with organized is a very important step to performing well.
Managing risk and making the necessary decisions, usually making concessions, and trying to negotiate are among the unseen sides of this line of work. Advising on the decisions to be taken is central to a Business Analyst’s job. But most often, what needs to be done simply cannot be dictated, especially if you are working in the area of consulting. A Business Analyst relies on the power of persuasion to encourage acceptance of his/her suggestions. Negotiation usually means being able to convince people with opposing goals to be able to see and embrace the bigger piece.
