Telescopes of the World: the Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the most vital research tools in the world today. Well, out of the world, to be precise. It is named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble and was sent up to space in 1990.
Hubble today is not the same as it was when it was launched. Its scientific instruments have been serviced and replaced over the years. The last servicing was done in 2009. At any point in time, it can house five scientific instruments.
Hubble observes the universe in three parts of the spectrum — visible light, near ultraviolet, and near infrared.
Hubble has helped solve a lot of mysteries about the Universe. Perhaps one of its biggest contributions has been to enable us to know exactly how old the universe itself is.
