Good times in the great outdoors

With summer right around the corner, I wanted to share a quick note from the actual (non-campaign) trail about how great the “great outdoors” really is.

One of my favorite trails in Shenandoah National Park

It’s no secret that I love the outdoors. Whether it’s fishing, canoeing, camping, or hiking, I’ll take any reason to get some fresh air.

Thankfully, this seems to run in the family.

Anne and I have always loved camping, and I’m proud to say we’ve passed that love on to our kids. All three of our children were in tents before they were 6 months old! Some of my favorite family memories come from our annual camping trips to Douthat State Park.

For me, there’s no better way to spend a summer day than exploring nature on an early morning hike — and there’s no better way to spend a summer night than sleeping under the stars.

One of the reasons I love being outdoors so much is because it allows you to experience a different kind of beauty than we’re used to. It’s an infinite beauty — not the 2-D kind of thing you experience on a TV screen or computer, but the four dimensional beauty of real creation. And I think we could all use a little more beauty in our lives right now.

So, if you’re still looking for summer plans (besides volunteering, of course), here’s my advice: Find your local state or national park and discover that beauty for yourself. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

Hope you have a great summer,

Tim
