Productiveness in Groups

We need to understand that one of the major keys to being a good team member is to not only make yourself be productive, but make your team be productive as a whole. It is very easy for teamwork to fail, and ultimately just be a complete waste of time.

In the book, “Productive Group Work : How to Engage Students, Build Teamwork, and Promote Understanding,” by Frey, Fisher, and Everlove it says, “we must view group work as more of a means of completing a task or project. Productive group work is an essential stepping stone to learning and mastery” (pg 14). What this quote means essentially is that its not all about the end goal, it is also a lot about how you get there. If you get there the right way, the end result will be good. The quote also talks about how we must be productive in our teams in order to learn as much as we can.

Being productive as an individual leads to group productivity. One of key’s to productivity is to work with people who share the same philosophies and interests as you. In Robert Sharma’s blog, “The Methods for SuperHuman Productivity,” he says, “Behavioral scientists have discovered the phenomenon of ‘emotional contagion.’ This describes the fact that, unconsciously, we adopt the beliefs, feelings and behaviors of the people we spend most of our time with.” If we are surrounded with people who do not care about the team and the work that is getting done, we will begin to not care. We need to surround ourselves with people who want what we want, or even better off to surround ourselves who we want to be like, and we will begin to be like them.

Without productivity, teamwork will fail. We need to make it our priority to make sure we are productive, and if everyone does this, much more would be accomplished in the work place
