The affluent city of Pompeii was originally settled in the Bronze Age, on an escarpment on the slopes of the Mighty Volcano Vesuvius, just by the mouth of the river Sarno.
The ancient city was one of the most important in the Bay of Naples.
The blooming site and its surroundings offered several major advantages, to start with, they were blessed with an utmost favourable climate, and highly mineral-rich fertile volcanic soil that aided the creation of a thriving agricultural industry, while the Sarno and the city’s port by the shores of the Mediterranean facilitated the transport of the city’s produce throughout the Roman Empire.
The advantageous weather conditions that were foremost the reason for its existence also attracted Rome’s high society, who converted the harbor city into a great holiday resort, a fashionable holiday paradise reserved for a lucky few, the Roman upper class, its Elite, and their wildest dreams.
