One of the many roles of a product manager is to incorporate user behavior into the product development process. In principle, this may be a “duh, that’s the whole point”, but is it really applied in the real world? Is user behavior properly balanced with new feature releases? Our group of product managers had their own thoughts on the topic and here is what they had to say:

Everyone agreed that behavior is massively important. Although hard to quantify, using personas and tying behavior to product strategy are key components in the overall development process.

A mixture of both. Untapped behavior cannot be ignored since future growth needs to be a consideration as well.

Data is key but in the absence of data, all you have is experience to rely on. However, one should always be aware of the “value” of the past experience.

Depends on many factors, but if there’s a larger goal to changing it, then why not just burn it allll down.

Or, sometimes user behavior can support the data…

Behavior can be observed “internally” as well. And, you can’t satisfy all users!

We are curious to hear your thoughts and opinions on this topic and more — please tune into our Twitter Chat at 8pm EST every Tuesday under #prodmgmt and drop knowledge on us!
