Have You Noticed Less Spam Email Lately?

Yeah, I didnโ€™t think so

A screenshot of an email Junk inbox folder. The highlighted email is supposedly from UPS with a subject line of โ€œyou have (1) package waiting for deliveryโ€Šโ€”โ€Šโ€” 04โ€“18โ€“2024.โ€ The email address and certain elements of the email have visual cues that suggest it is a phishing attempt or spam, such as the random-looking senderโ€™s email address.

Did you know that Google has been using AI for spam detection since 2019? Itโ€™s true, and back then they said AI was helping them block 100 million extra spam messages every day. If you are a Gmail user, you might have just spit out your coffee, for which I apologize.

I still have a Gmail account and yes, it does properly mark a lot of junk mail, so I suppose technically it is detecting it. However, much of it is so obviously spam that there really is no reason to have me double check their work.

Take the supposed message in the photo above. In what world would UPS be sending a message with emoji in the subject line? Seriously? My wife might do that, but UPS?

That right there would confirm it, youโ€™d think, but of course there is much more. A return address with a โ€œhtiahvuhxcjcuavcxtrsax.roighkixtbee.comโ€ domain? There is no such domain, of course, but would UPS ever use such nonsense?

I gave ChatGPT 4 the raw email text and asked what it thought of it. I was not at all suprised by this response:
