How Could AI-Generated Ads Change Advertising Forever?

And who might benefit?

Ben Thompson wrote a very long article at Stratechery.com, making an argument that Meta “is in fact the most well-placed company to take advantage of generative AI.”

He’s a smart guy, but I think he could be wrong about that.

Who can benefit?

You already know that Ben thinks Meta can benefit the most. He says that Meta’s extensive user base (over 3 billion daily users across all its apps) and advanced machine learning capabilities will give them a strong advantage.

Will it?

Google has about 2.2 billion users, but while Meta apps focus primarily on social networking and communication, Google has a much wider range of apps. Apple is about the same in terms of users and diversity of apps.

How many Meta users are not also using Google and/or Apple apps? Not many, I’d guess, but there may be many millions of Google/Apple app users who completely shun Meta. That might be even more true in the Apple user camp because of privacy issues.

So let’s break it down: Meta has been doing machine-learning-driven ads since 2010. Google started doing that ten years earlier. Apple…
