I keep reading posts here saying that AI is nothing to worry about. Unlike humans, it cannot create, cannot invent, cannot *think* like we do. We are safe — at least those of us doing more “skilled” work. Nothing to worry about, they say.

I get particularly amused by writers who say “I can spot AI writing instantly — nothing for me to worry about!”

That’s so reminiscent of what photographers said about the first digital cameras.

Yesterday I talked with a high level programmer with decades of experience. He’s heading a team at a corporation whose name you would know, whose products you may own. He knows his stuff, so much so that I didn’t even know what he was talking about part of the time.

He didn’t want to be quoted for this story so I’ll paraphrase everything.

We were actually talking about other things when he brought up AI. The first thing he said was that he was worried and so were some people on his team, but others were not — they felt their skills would never be reached by AI.

He has a very accomplished team. He told them that he felt they would be safe for now, but…
