I’ve Been Hiding Things in iOS 18 Safari

You’ll be able to do the same soon

A typical web page with a distracting video blathering away in the lower right corner and obscuring the text I want to read

So there I was, reading a very interesting article about how some scientists are thinking that what we now think are elementary particles are actually constructed from even smaller things. I am no atomic physicist, but I always have thought that might be true, so I’m reading what I can understand.

But there’s an annoying video down in the right hand corner that will be obscuring text as soon as I scroll down.

What is it? Is that the author? I don’t know, and I don’t care. I didn’t come here to watch a video, I came here to read the article. Aargh!

iOS 18 has a fix

Oh, it’s so nice. And so easy. Click on this thing-a-ma-bub I circled in yellow:

A screenshot of a webpage on the Big Think website displaying an article titled “Subatomic puzzle: Are quarks and leptons hiding another level of matter?” published on August 5, 2024. The top of the screen shows the Safari browser interface with a highlighted reader view icon circled in yellow.

And then, as of iOS 18, and whether you have hardware capable of Apple Intelligence or not, this is what you get:

A screenshot of the Big Think website displaying an article titled “Subatomic puzzle: Are quarks and leptons hiding another level of matter?” The Safari browser menu is open on the left, showing options like “Hide Distracting Items,” “Report Distraction Control Issue,” “Reduce Privacy Protections,” and “Translate to Spanish,” with “Hide Distracting Items” highlighted.
