Earthquake warning
My First ShakeAlert in Los Angeles Got me Shook
A few seconds warning before and earthquake is a game changer
My Android phone and mom’s iPhone emitted the EBS signal at the same time last night. I glanced over at my phone expecting a child abduction or some other event that didn’t concern me.
The notification looked something like this.
ShakeAlert? Earthquake nearby? Woah, this was new.
The warning I got was for a 5.7 earthquake that was about 60 miles away. A 5.7 is nothing to sneeze at, but at 60 miles away the shaking I was about to experience would be minor. There was no need to run outside or jump under something sturdy for protection from things falling.
“Mom, we got an earthquake coming!” I yelled from the kitchen into the living room.
“What?” was her reply.
She heard me. Being told an earthquake is coming isn’t how you’re alerted there’s an earthquake. The ground starts shaking. Maybe if you’re watching the news, the studio gets it a few seconds before we feel it.
