She Said, “We Use Android, I’m Not Paying a Thousand Dollars for an Apple Watch”

I don’t blame her, but she is wrong

I noticed a neighbor’s watch, and told her that I momentarily thought it was Apple. She responded, “Of course we use Android, I’m not paying a thousand dollars for an Apple Watch.”

Well, Apple watches actually start at $249. Even the Ultra 2, Apple’s most expensive watch, is $799 unless you gussy it up with a fancy band. But maybe she meant she’d have to buy an Apple phone as well as a watch to switch from Android? That’s a different story.

Okay, we’ve got $249 for the Apple Watch SE. The least expensive iPhone now would be an iPhone14 at $599, and really, this year anyone should buy the $799 iPhone 16 a, so, yeah, even with selling off whatever you have, it doesn’t come cheap.

But what are you gaining?

Let’s look at the low end. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 is quite similar to Apple’s SE in features, and is $50 more expensive. Samsung adds blood pressure and ECG testing, but lacks Crash Detection. Samsung also has a far better battery life.

Apple’s Series 10 starts at $399. It has a brighter display, Crash Detection, and more advanced health monitoring (like pending sleep apnea…
