And other ridiculous questions

In the AI world, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is the Holy Grail. Some people insist we’ll never get there, others think we are getting close, and a very few think we are already there.

If you were able to show ChatGPT to someone in 1950, they’d probably be in the “this is a thinking machine” camp. If you jumped forward and showed it to someone in 2050, they’d probably laugh and call it primitive.

As I write this, Microsoft and OpenAI are planning a $100 billion dollar AI supercomputer. Some people are saying this will be the birth of AGI. I can say with confidence that no matter what, somebody, probably a lot of somebodies, will still insist that it isn’t.

And the people who think AGI robots will be hunting down and killing humans will be worried sick.

By the way, Microsoft must think there is little danger of AGI because if it did turn out that way, as judged by OpenAI’s board, Microsoft wouldn’t be allowed to use the machine. That’s the way OpenAI works. Or maybe Microsoft thinks they could convince a judge that the board was nuts.

Whatever. Let’s look at a bigger picture. If Microsoft wants in on something like this, AGI or not, so do other massive corporations. If Microsoft &…
