Have you tried DeepSeek? I tried it today to look for typos and bad punctuation in a story I wrote earlier this week. I gave it this prompt followed by the story.

Review this for typos and punctuation. List lines with errors and another line with the correction. Do not list lines without errors.

I had already run the story through ChatGPT with a similar prompt, so I didn’t expect it to find much. However, it alerted me to five typos that my chatty friend completely missed.

Well, for twenty bucks a month, what can you expect? You can expect me to cancel the ChatGPT subscription — and I did. Sheesh!

Update 2025–01–31: In further testing of proofreading, I found that DeepSeek makes just as many mistakes as Apple and ChatGPT, but often in different places. Using all three helps me catch more. I may add another free one too.

I do have some questions about the damage DeepSeek did to some tech stocks. I understand why Nvidia got whacked and why it seems to be recovering today. Initially, investors figured we might not need Nvidia’s powerful chips, but eventually realized, “Hey, if that DeepSeek stuff can do so well on less powerful chips…
