My favorite news story of 2024 so far has nothing to do with politics or the economy. Here it is:

“See-Through Baseball Pants Have Fans, and Brands, Pointing Fingers.”

And when I say it’s my “favorite” story, what I mean is that it perfectly sums up my grouchy feeling that a lot of what passes for tech is not actively making our lives better.

What does tech have to do with baseball players’ pants?

Earlier this year, stories hit the press about the new Major League Baseball uniforms for the 2024 season. Notably? Players and fans thought the new jerseys, designed by Nike and Fanatics to be lighter and more breathable, “looked cheap.” But the part of the story that really got to me was about the baseball players’ pants and how they were going to fit.

There is a major difference this year: The pants are no longer being tailored to individual players. Instead, players were given four cuts to choose from: slim, standard, athletic and muscular. (Nike scanned the bodies of 300 major league players to create the various options.)”
