What’s Wrong With Apple Appealing the Ridiculous Ruling on the Epic Games Suit?

People aren’t thinking this through

This ruling stinks. Photo by and of author.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. I listen while I’m driving, while I’m exercising, and sometimes when I’m apparently just staring into space. I’ve heard a LOT of reporting on the latest ruling in the case Epic brought against Apple.

I just listened to a podcast where three out of four people gleefully explained why Apple was very, very wrong and shouldn’t be allowed to take any percentage of Epic’s website sales.

If you don’t know what this is about, Apple is being forced to allow apps to offer alternative payment methods, so that developers like Epic can avoid paying Apple’s 15–30% commission on in-app purchases.

Here’s what nobody has seemed to notice: with this ruling in place, Epic could charge nothing for their app (which is what they do) and collect all the money on their own website. Apple would get nothing.
