Yes, Apple Maps Is Tracking You, but Apple Is Not

I hate these stupid headlines

Heading from CNET email displaying “Don’t Let Your iPhone’s Maps App Track You in iOS 26”
CNET email this morning

This clickbait headline arrived in my email inbox this morning. I’m sure many will read it and think “Damn Apple is tracking my location and probably selling it to criminals. I bet the FBI gets it too!”

The actual article had a more honest headline: How to Turn Off ‘Visited Places’ in Your Maps App on iOS 26 and also quickly admitted that all of this is on your phone and Apple itself cannot see it. What Apple Maps does in iOS 26 is keeping temporary records of places you have been. As the word “recent” implies, these records are deleted automatically as they age out.

That’s useful to many people for quick re-routes, remembering where you parked, or going back to a restaurant you visited yesterday. If it’s not useful to you, sure, shut it off.

That’s the whole story. No spying. No reporting to Apple. Just dumb click-bait headlines.

You might think that having several thousand followers here would translate into big money. The reality is it usually adds up to only a few dollars a day. If you’ve enjoyed this post, one-time or monthly support is always appreciated — you can do that at Ko-fi.
