Your fear of missing out is more worrisome than missing out

Fear of missing out is akin to a gambling addiction. We go to extreme lengths to solidify ourselves into whatever weird wild world is hot and trending. Our high hopes, often dashed, give way to disappointment which leads to resentments and demoralization.

It’s a terrible way to go through life. Nobody should ever have to feel this way. Here are five ways to avoid FOMO.

  1. Make sure you understand what you actually want in life. You might think it’s money, but what will you do with all this money?
  2. Turn off your mobile notifications. Can’t miss out on something you don’t know about.
  3. Pursue original ideas. You don’t need to piggy back off of someone else. You have everything you need right now.
  4. Become digitally aware. I would tell you to leave Facebook but I don’t think that’s happening. At least try not to click on suggested videos, links, or any other content that is being served to you based off targeted advertising metrics.
  5. You will always miss out on something you are just now hearing about. Isn’t that a relief? Now you don’t have to be afraid anymore.

FOMO can cause serious mental illness in people who are prone to addiction. It can also lead to severe depression, isolation, and a general negativity towards the world as a whole.

Never let someone else’s success dictate your feelings about your status in life. There are plenty of ways to measure success outside of monitory gain. If you can’t find ways to be happy when you don’t have money, then you won’t find ways to be happy when you do.
