German Aerospace Engineer Breaks World Record for Living 120 Days Underwater
German aerospace engineer Rudiger Koch set a new world record by living underwater for 120 days in a capsule off Panama’s coast.
At 59, Koch broke the previous 100-day record held by American Joseph Dituri. Emerging from his 30-square-meter capsule, he celebrated with champagne, a cigar, and a dive into the Caribbean Sea in front of a Guinness World Records adjudicator.
The capsule included a bed, toilet, TV, computer, internet, and an exercise bike. Food and medical supplies were delivered through a tube, and solar panels powered the capsule with a backup generator. However, it lacked a shower facility.
Koch described the underwater calm and glowing beauty as unforgettable. While proud of his achievement, he admitted feeling sad to leave the underwater world he’d grown to love.
