My M1 MacBook Air Suffered A Memory Leak And Boy Was It Painful

But I finally found the culprit and my memory leaks no more

Okay, I’ve read about the issue of memory leaks with macOS and was told about it by Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix), but now I’ve seen it first hand.

My computer is the base model M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of flash storage, but as it turns out, the same problem has been reported on the M1 MacBook Air with 16GB of unified memory. What led me to notice the problem? It wasn’t because the computer showed any signs of slowing down, no I noticed it when I got an out of memory notification suggesting that I close any unused applications.

I only had Kiwi for Gmail, Google Chrome, and iMessage opened at the time, along with Amphetamine running in the background.

I was concerned, what was I going to do!

The first thing I did was open CleanMyMac X and click “Free up” to free up memory. The utility showed that I was down to single-digit megabytes of free memory. CleanMyMac X increased available memory to 4.41GB.

A pretty nice increase I thought.

I continued to watch my available free memory (using the utility) and not more than 2 minutes later, without…
