Tech Like Us: What’s it all about?

Tech Like Us features stories from women and minorities working in tech careers. It’s no secret that these groups are underrepresented in the tech world, and as a result, many young people that could be interested in tech roles lack models of how to get there. I want to make these examples more accessible. My dream is that a young student finds this publication, reads these stories, and thinks “I can do that too!” If that happens even once, this project is a success.

For Readers

Please engage with the writers! Post your private or public questions and comments on specific sections of a story using Medium’s great “notes” feature. Also, feel free to leave a response on the entire piece.

For Writers: How to Contribute Your Story to Tech Like Us

To submit a story:

  1. Read through this brief guide before writing and submitting. Stories should be personal and illustrate what it’s like to be a minority in tech.
  2. Write!
  3. When you’re ready, email your Medium “draft link” or published piece to: don@techlikeus.org

A few prompts to consider when writing your story (it’s not necessary to follow this order or include everything):

  • What’s your ethnic background?
  • How do you identify culturally?
  • How did you get to where you are?
  • How did you become interested in tech?
  • Did you go to college? What did you major in?
  • How was your college experience?
  • What have been your challenges?
  • How have you pushed through hard times?
  • What are your goals?
  • If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be? Why?
  • What do you do for fun?
  • How do you balance work and life outside of the office?
