As I mentioned in my report from the Droidcon Berlin 2023, the JetBrains team announced that Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) would be stable in October 2023. On the first of November, the time had finally come. With this slight delay, they kept their word.

While multiple companies like McDonald’s, Netflix, and Philips used the framework in its beta phase or even earlier in production, it also has reached official production stability.

The released Kotlin version 1.9.20 contains the first stable KMP version. From this version on, Kotlin Multiplatform can be used without worries of breaking backward compatibility to earlier stable versions.

However, as we are used to it when working with Kotlin, there are still functions or sub-frameworks marked as experimental that may receive an update with such breaking changes.

What’s new with KMP going Stable?

Besides the backward compatibility guarantee, one major update with Kotlin 1.9.20 is also striking.

The Gradle setup, one of the major pain points of this framework, received a significant update that simplifies the setup.
