It’s no longer a secret that Toyota has fallen behind most other automakers in its transition to EVs. Although it was one of the first companies to adopt hybrid technology, under the leadership of Akio Toyoda, Toyota has been highly reluctant to invest in EV technology. The result of this hesitation is evident in Toyota’s lackluster bZ4X EV, and its equally-disappointing Lexus sibling, the RZ450e.

While Akio Toyoda undoubtedly led the company to many great achievements, many have criticised him for his seemingly shortsighted perspective on the potential of EVs. But now that he’s set to resign as CEO in April of this year, Toyoda is no longer a bottleneck for what Toyota will be able to achieve with EVs moving forwards.

Toyota’s new CEO, Koji Sato, has openly shared that revamping the company’s EV strategy is one of his top priorities, and that it now revolves around a new dedicated EV platform expected to arrive by 2026. While that’s still several years away, Toyota is taking steps in the right direction to ensure that this platform will be revolutionary.
