Samsung released renders of the new S8 Lite on Weibo and specs have been shown in listings from the FCC and TENAA. This seems like an odd choice given that the S9 lineup is fairly new into release as of March , along with the Galaxy A8 phones. The S8 Lite is meant to serve as a lower cost entry into the Galaxy S8 ecosystem.

The phone retains the infinity display that was present on the S8 phones and looks to be about the same in the design department. The size of the phone is the same as the original S8 at 5.8-inches, but is changing a few things to reach that budget-friendly goal.

Its screen is a lower resolution at 2220 x 1080p, compared to the S8’s 2960 x 1440p display. The camera on the phone has been downgraded from the 12 megapixel one on the S8 to a cheaper megapixel version.

While the S8 ran with a Snapdragon 835, the Lite version is using a 660 with the same amount of RAM and a drop in graphics power to an Adreno 512 GPU. The Lite doesn’t have an option for 64GB or 128GB, instead the only option is a 64GB version. It does remain expandable up to 256GB though. And the battery is the same 3,000mAh battery found in the S8.

There is no release date at the moment for the device, but it is the beginnings of a new system where Samsung brings back cheaper version of older devices to help those on a budget.
