Drones have emerged as a fresh new way to get amazing shots and they won’t necessarily break your bank either. They even have software that can help you navigate terrain and crate a path to make what your shooting look even better.

One thing to consider with drones, like with all camera equipment, is what your use case is. I’d be willing to bet that there is an option for you, whether you’re an amateur who likes making movies in their free time, you’re a prosumer who gets paid every now and then for your work or a professional who is making their living off of film making.

Drones can range from palm sized with a low-quality camera to massive with the capabilities to carry a gimbal and cinema camera.

A benefit to this is that almost anyone can get a drone and learn to use it. You don’t have to jump right into the deep end just to learn to swim with them. Drones can be one of the most accessible pieces of equipment you can get.

Like with all equipment, you get what you pay for though. The cheaper you go the less creature comforts and features you’re going to get. The higher-end models like the DJI Mavic Pro comes with a 4K camera with a 3-axis gimbal, but you won’t find that on models much cheaper than that. The Mavic also has flight stabilization and a huge range of 4.3 miles.

I personally believe that a drone is becoming a necessary component in a lot of filmmakers tool kits, which is a good thing. But in order to get the best, you have to pay for the best.

There are still fantastic drones for much cheaper. You can get the GoPro Karma for about $300 and then you can buy the new GoPro Hero for $200 to make a fantastic combo for about half as much as the Mavic.

I think it’s worth it to save up and get a drone for your personal kit to get the best overhead wide and scenic shots you can.
