Welcome to the first tech reading list of July. Let’s start with a back to basics. When it comes to Virtual, augmented and mixed reality my imagination runs away with me but I sometimes like to come back to the basics so this article from Android Authority did the trick; ‘AR vs VR: what’s the difference?’ (30/06/17) But still time to get excited with this video that uses the Apple ARkit

Social media can be emotional more so the effects of it can be emotionally damaging. So this article grabbed my attention not because I dislike Instagram but it shares in common with others its adherence to the algorithm than can work to our advantage and at other times; ‘Instagram is actively ruining my life with its inhumane algorithm’ (Damon Beres , Mashable, 24/06/17)

The one thing that keeps me going with technology is its ability to change lives for the better. So happy to have discovered this article in the Guardian ‘From braille to Be My Eyes — there’s a revolution happening in tech for the blind’

Apps are linking visually impaired people to sighted volunteers as assistive technology enters a new era of connectivity (Alex Lee, 26/06/17)

So who will remember this Tech Reading list in a 100 years, very few, more likely none at all. Maybe the British Library Internet Archive will capture it. This piece fittingly from 2015 New Yorker poses the question in its title ‘The Cobweb. Can the Internet be archived? (Jill Lepore, 26/01/2015) I learned quite a bit from this article including this nugget:

Copyright is the elephant in the archive. One reason the Library of Congress has a very small Web-page collection, compared with the Internet Archive, is that the Library of Congress generally does not collect a Web page without asking, or, at least, giving notice. “The Internet Archive hoovers,”

In the cut throat world of tech reading lists -) Time for a shout out. This list will keep you tech smart. It’s from Dave Briggs with his Five For Friday reading list.
