A warm Washington, August 2012 (Shane Dillon)

The first two articles of this weeks list come from the world of digital diplomacy. Not sure what this is? well a good place to start, read Andreas Sandre Medium article ‘What is digital diplomacy (2016) The authors of the two articles I highlight may mildly balk at being lumped into Digital Diplomacy but here goes …

The first article is from Tom Fletcher who was a practitioner and an popular exponent of ‘digital diplomacy’. His piece for Oxford University Press ‘If diplomacy did not exist, we would need to invent it’ (June 2017) I would hasten to call the next article a riposte to Tom rather its a more grounded take on diplomats use of Information and communication technology (ICT). The article is called ‘Diplomats in a Networked Age’ (Shaun Riordan, 03/07/17)

Next up is Japan’s SoftBank who have what we might say ‘ambitions’. Take this from their CEO Masayoshi Son

“I think a big paradigm shift is coming. The biggest theme in my view is the Singularity. I think it is coming into reality in the next 30 years. For that vision, I am exercising that strategy. $100 billion is an interesting size of ammunition. In my view, that is the beginning.”

To size up whether this moonshot is worth it. Read this from Wired ‘The Japanese company betting billions to prepare for the singularity’ (01/07/17)

If you want to know what singularity will look like think of it as the rapture with robots -)

This article is a bit more close to home. It looks at Artificial Intelligence (AI) not as some far off effect but what it is happening today and its possible effects on our lives ‘The Real Threat of Artificial Intelligence’ (KAI-FU LEE, New York Times, June 2017)

If you are curious about the screen grab below its from the Fjord living business model. I discovered this in an article tweeted out by @MarkBDunwell who highly recommends the article I culled it from called ‘Culture and digital transformation: How to build a ‘living business’ (Ben Davies, Econsultancy, Feb 2017)

That’s it. Have a great tech weekend.
