Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 870 5G SoC its newest chip for smartphones

Qualcomm announced on Tuesday, January 19, its newest chip for smartphones, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G. This chip can be considered as an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 865+ with a faster CPU and other improvements.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 870 5G features a Kryo 585 CPU running at a clock speed of up to 3.2GHz and Adreno 650 GPU for faster rendering. In addition, the new chip was developed to offer a better gaming experience thanks to optimizations as part of Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming. It offers support for upgradeable video drivers, support for screens up to 4K at 60Hz, HDR with 10-bit color depth, Desktop Forward Rendering, Game Color Plus v2.0, and Game Smoother.

The Snapdragon 870 5G supports devices with 4K resolution screens at 60Hz and QHD + 144Hz and external monitors with 4K resolution at 60Hz. It also supports playback of videos up to 4K resolution based on H.265 (HEVC), H.264 (AVC), VP8, and VP9 codecs with Dolby Vision, HDR10 +, HDR10, and HLG.

For cameras, Qualcomm’s new chip features the Qualcomm Spectra 480 Image Signal Processor and supports configurations with a camera up to 200MP, with a camera up to 64MP with MFNR and ZSL (Multiple Frame Noise reduction and Zero Shutter Lag), and with two cameras up to 25MP with ZSL. It supports capturing videos with 4K resolution with simultaneous capture of photos and video in slow motion with HD resolution (720p) up to 960 fps.

For connectivity, the Snapdragon 870 5G comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem, which promises download and upload speeds of up to 7.5Gbps and 3Gbps on 5G networks. Still, on 5G networks, it supports Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), mmWave, and sub-6 GHz. Other connectivity options include support for Wi-Fi 6 with speeds up to 1,774Gbps, support for WPA3 Wi-Fi security protocol, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, location services Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GNSS, NavIC, GPS, GNSS, QZSS and SBAS, and USB 3.1 (USB Type-C).

Qualcomm also mentions that the chip comes with the fifth generation of the Qualcomm Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engine; which includes the Hexagon 698 processor with Hexagon Tensor Accelerator for a performance of up to 15TOPS, supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM with a frequency of up to 2,133 MHz and LPDDR5 with a frequency of up to 2,750MHz, and Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology. With regard to audio, the Snapdragon 870 5G comes with Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec, supports aptX audio playback, and more. Qualcomm confirmed that the new chip will come equipped with smartphones from companies like Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi later this year.
