TVB commenced broadcasting since 1967. It is the first wireless commercial TV Station and best-known household TV Brand name in HK. With its iconic brand and long histories, TVB reaches 80% of audience share and becomes the leading broadcaster in Hong Kong.

Over the past decades, TVB is an early mover in the industry to improve its services. Riding the wave of technological change, TVB has strived to expand its digital media business which is backed by its strong production capability and huge archive of TV programmes.

With this series of technology blog, we will introduce the latest technology adoption for TVB in video streaming, application development, big data analysis, recommendation, cloud migration, ad tech, infrastructure evolution and operation & monitoring.

Why OTT?

As user’s lifestyle is changing, they may not be available to watch particular broadcasting TV Programme at scheduled time. myTV SUPER is the Over-the-top (OTT) Platform which offers 1-to-1 video delivery service to user at anytime and suits the user’s trend and habit. Therefore, seamless video delivery and rich contents on OTT are the keys. When starting to build myTV SUPER, TVB aims at providing service in high availability because of its strong broadcasting background. myTV SUPER service is designed to deliver in 99.95% availability. It can carry linear channels without limit, initially over 50 live channels and with 3-hour instant rewind, 48,000 hours VOD and Live VOD which allow user to select sports event from the beginning of the event. myTV SUPER introduces a rich set of features, including dynamic Ad Insertion, content based Ad, Ad replacement, multi-language subtitling, 4K and HDR video.

In long run, TVB aims at replacing DTT Broadcasting by OTT Service extensively.

Why short video?

Short form video becomes a good choice to spend on fragmented time when user is travelling or waiting. User can easily focus on particular subject and keep up-to-date trend immediately from short videos. Therefore, TVB further rolled out Big Big Channel, a free mobile app providing self-produced short-formatted video content featuring TVB’s artistes and KOLs. The platform enables artistes and KOLs to interact with fans. It also provides a new channel for advertisements. TVB has also actively engaged in developing e-commerce platform and rolled out Big Big Shop, a brand new one-stop online shopping platform. It combines TV viewing and online shopping service, enabling viewers to purchase premium products/services while they watch TV.

What’s next?

Now, TVB has successfully transformed from a traditional television station to a company amalgamating broadcast TV, online TV, social media platform and e-commerce service.
