The TechEquity Collaborative is a startup organization that educates and activates tech workers who think the Bay Area’s tech-driven economy can and should work for everyone. We believe the tech industry can be a force for broad-based opportunity rather than displacement and inequality. We focus on two issue areas: housing and workforce & labor. And we activate our community in three ways: awareness-raising, creating volunteer opportunities, and advocacy campaigns.

Despite our regional mandate, in practice we only have the capacity to support programming in San Francisco and northern Alameda Counties. The South Bay Director will be responsible for expanding our programming to the South Bay, including southern Alameda, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.

The Director of South Bay Programming will report to the Executive Director.

This mid-level role is ideal for:

  • Someone with 5–10 years of workforce experience in policy, community organizing, and/or tech community relations
  • Someone who is comfortable working independently and with a remote team (we are based in Oakland, you would be based in the South Bay)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Recruiting tech workers who live in the South Bay into our community
  • Developing relationships with tech companies that have offices in the South Bay in order to add them to our pipeline of corporate partners
  • Building relationships with community organizations doing work in the South Bay that can develop into partnerships on advocacy or other programming
  • Developing an understanding of local policy issues that relate to our focus areas and creating strategies for advocating around those policies
  • Producing programming for our event series that takes place in the South Bay and that covers issues relevant to South Bay residents
  • Producing content for our blog and other channels highlighting our South Bay programming

Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a role that required program development and implementation, leadership on setting strategy, and independence in executing responsibilities
  • A deep understanding of the civic landscape in the South Bay
  • A high level of comfort interacting with members of the tech community
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong networking skills
  • Ability to operate as an independent worker who can be productive without a lot of hands-on oversight
  • Ability to manage events, from designing the content to executing day-of logistics
  • Ability to thrive working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Live in, or be willing to relocate to, the Bay Area (strong preference for a resident of the South Bay)

TechEquity is a very young startup with high growth potential. The person serving in this position needs to be excited to get in on the ground floor of a new organization and able to roll with the dynamism that entails. This means being open to fluidity, being willing to jump in and do the necessary even if it isn’t in the job description, and being passionate about building the organization in partnership with the founding team.

This is a (competitive) salaried position and comes with full health and dental benefits.

TechEquity values diversity. We especially encourage people from communities underrepresented in the tech industry, and Bay Area natives, to apply for this role.
