The BMW X family line just got more prominent in the US. BMW officially unveiled its production model X2 ‘coupe-like’ crossover at the Detriot Auto Show this past week.

BMW says that this new X2 crossover will be the key to their continued growth, in which one-third of their vehicle sales come from the X line.

The positioning of the X2 as a sexier, edgier version of the X1 is obviously meant to appeal to younger drivers. The X2 will go head to head against the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Porsche Macan, and Audi A3.

One model will be available at launch: the X2 xDrive28i. This model will feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 delivering 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Standard 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive will get the X2 from 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

18-inch alloys, a 7-speaker audio system, and SensaTec seats all come as standard options. Power-folding mirrors, a panoramic roof, auto-dimming mirrors, and more are available for an additional $2,350 in the Convenience Package.

Pricing starts at $39,395 when the car arrives in showrooms in the spring. We also hear that a more powerful X2 M35i version is in the works.
