INFOGRAPHIC: The Countries With The Most U.S. Visa Overstay Rates

On January 31, 2020, President Donald Trump of the United States of America expanded his highly controversial travel ban — which is expected to take effect on February 21, 2020 — to include six additional countries, including Nigeria citing Africa’s largest economy’s failure to comply with security and information sharing requirements as reasons for imposing the restriction on visas that could result in a permanent residency in the US.

But in terms of US visa overstay rates, how does Nigerian nationals fare when compared to other countries around the world?

Techloy’s latest infographic digs deeper into the data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which reveals that almost 30,000 Nigerians overstayed their business or pleasure visas (B1/B2) in 2018, making it the 5th country with the most visa overstays in the United States for the visa category, and the only African country on the top 20 list of the most US nonimmigrant visa overstays.

Yet, that figure appears small when compared to the almost 90,000 Canadian nationals who overstayed their visas in the same year. Techloy also notes that nationals from the United Kingdom, Spain and France — although under the US Visa Waiver Program — were one of those with the highest US visa overstay rates in the world for B1/B2 visa category.

As for student and exchange US visa overstays in 2018, Nigeria (1,944) ranked as the 8th country in the world with the most visa overstays in the United States for the visa category, while China (12,924) was ranked number one, followed by India (5,716) and Saudi Arabia (3,917) in second and third positions respectively, according to Techloy’s infographic (above) based on the data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
