South African telecommunications company, MTN is allegedly owing the Nigerian government $2 billion in back taxes related to the import of foreign equipment and payments to suppliers over the past 10 years, according to a statement by the company.

The news comes less than a week after the company was asked to return $8.1 billion by Nigeria’s central bank, which it was alleged to have illegally taken out of the country.

Although the company has since refuted the accusation, it also believes it has settled all tax obligations to the Nigerian government.
