PENG, an African celebrity shoutout platform that lets you connect with fans and talents
Have you always wanted to connect with fans and talents in the entertainment industry, while monetizing the same through personalized video shoutouts?
A new platform called PENG (which is short for Personal Engagement) has launched to provide users the opportunity to request and receive a 60-second video shoutout from their favourite celebrities, at an affordable cost.
How PENG works?
The platform lets you search through the list of available talents including comedians, dancers, actors, actresses, influencers, DJs, etc. Some of the popular talents currently on the platform include Buchi, Orezi, Teddy A, Omobaba No.1, Lolo, Tope Olowoniyan, to mention a few.
You then choose your favorite talent, type in a few lines of instructions for the video shoutout to be created and then make a payment. An example of what to say is: It’s my wife’s birthday and she’s your big fan. I’ll like you to wish her a happy birthday. Thanks.
Why PENG rocks?
From a user’s perspective, the attraction of this service is super cool. Let’s say you and your mum are huge fans of Nollywood actor, Yemi Solade or Fred Amata, getting a shoutout video message from any of them as a surprise gift will be quite memorable.
Also, if you are considering promoting your brand and you really don’t want something too complex, you can get one of the celebrities to promote your product/service for a fee slightly higher than their base price. But, this fee will be lower than what you would typically pay if you go through them or an agency.
The platform wants to help talents in Nigeria and across Africa to monetize their skills the easiest way possible.
For the talents and celebrities, the platform provides them with the opportunity to connect with fans on a more personal level and earn extra money. Talents can get booked directly on the platform and accept request from users and fans anywhere in the world. With their busy schedules, talents can still dedicate an hour or two cumulatively to the platform monthly, even at their own convenience, say at an airport lounge, in a restaurant or on a beach while on vacation.
PENG co-founder, Temi Esan told Techloy that the platform’s goal is to simplify the engagement between African talents and fans globally at an affordable price.
According to him, “the best way for talents to maximize the benefit of our platform is to accept bookings from fans and create their videos because they earn money from it and also improves their brand extensively.”
The platform runs a commission-based model from the celebrity bookings with fees as low as N5,000, so they make money when the celebs make the shout-out videos for their fans, which they claim to donate a percentage of to charitable causes.
The personalized video shoutout model has been around for a long time now, so it is not really a novel idea, but PENG’s approach to the concept is simple, unique and trendy.
While the platform features what could be described as mostly B and C level celebrities who have a decent fan base, it would be interesting to see PENG attract A-list celebrities as well as social media influencers with a huge fan base.
Already, the platform has become an Internet sensation after trending through the hashtag #PENG on Twitter a couple of days ago, raising hopes that it could be the next big thing in entertainment and technology in Nigeria.
