DRDO BSAT Floating Device Will Make Retrieval of Debris Easier
DRDO has developed a floating black box named BSAT as a part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The black box will send signals and can be traced easily. DRDO BSAT can be used for submarines, torpedoes, underwater vehicles, aircraft’s etc.
Several aircraft have gone missing in mysterious circumstances, some are traced and some never traced. Many aircraft’s debris has been found after one or two decades after crashing. But the R&D agency of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has now developed a self-ejectable black box named BSAT for airplanes. Whenever an aircraft sinks after an accident the black box will be ejected automatically and gets activated when it will come in contact with water. After getting activated it starts sending the signal then it will be easier for the retrieval of debris.

Name — BSAT
Weight — 1.03 kg
Diameter — 151 mm
Endurance — 48 hours
How DRDO BSAT works?
DRDO’s BSAT working is simple and is discussed below –
- Black box ejects itself when aircraft hit the water.
- Floats on water and emits signals.
- Power itself on contact with water.
- Satellites search planes debris at the crash site.
BSAT has been developed and tested by Naval Science and Technology Laboratory of DRDO in Vishakapatnam. It uses a technology that is used to detect torpedoes. It has also good use in defense as when a submarine goes below its prescribed depth limit then it can send a signal and can be detected easily.
The black box also stores the data including speed, altitude and other parameters of an aircraft.
Why floating black box?
Following are the reasons that will be sufficient to prove why floating black box should be used –
- Most of the air routes are over water.
- Ejectable black box will not get damaged from the impact of water.
- Easier to find because it floats on the surface.
So it is supposed that its a great achievement by R&D department of DRDO under ‘Make in India’ initiative, to be patented in other countries like Russia and the US including India.
