Have you ever wondered what sets the great writers apart on Medium from the rest of the pack? Some writers seem to have people flock to their writing despite it looking seemingly normal. It’s as if the writing gods have blessed their words, and people are hypnotized into coming back. This isn’t to discount their hard work, but hard work only gets you so far. There must be something else at play.
Many of the top writers on this platform share their writing tips, which is invaluable. There is one thing that they can’t share, and that is authenticity. They cannot give you a voice. This is the number one distinguishing factor I see in common with all of the writers with big followings and who make a solid chunk of change on Medium. They are experts at sounding conversational and authentic.
Authenticity and finding your voice are the only things that will give you a chance to succeed long-term and have the flourishing writing career you desire. So dig deep and work on discovering who you truly are and what makes you unique from others. Stay true to this and avoid the common pitfall of trying to replicate someone else's style. This can easily be discerned as fake and inauthentic. Tell your story. What got you here? What has made you the person you are today? This is what readers eat up.
Don’t be afraid to be you. You are worth so much more than you know. Don’t discount your unique story and personality. It doesn’t take you being the most interesting person in the world to attract readers to your authentic self. All it takes is confidence in who you are and the knowledge of knowing you are enough. That’s it. Readers love people who are relatable and conversational.
This is the major reason I embarked on a 30-day writing challenge trying to share more personal details and stories about myself. Authenticity can be hard. It can be scary. It takes courage. But it is oh-so worth it and is the secret ingredient behind success on Medium.
I have written over 300 articles, and the ones that outperform all the others are when my true voice comes out. I truly have written far more detailed and information-packed articles than the ones with my authentic voice, but they are missing that one ingredient: authenticity. Guess what? The performance of those articles is abysmal compared to the much simpler ones containing my authentic voice and more personal details.
So, don’t be afraid to let yourself be known. Readers seek out people who can let their authenticity bleed into their words. Start today sharing more of your true voice and personality. It will pay off, and we do want to hear it. Never forget your worth and the fact that you are an amazing human. It is true.
