You’re not lazy… You’re productive

Wake up! It’s the 21st century, new technologies offer qualitative solutions to achieve error-free writing. So why deprive yourself of it? Spellcheckers are just a few clicks away.

Go online, type the name of your favorite spellchecker, and copy-paste your writing. You can also directly write in it. But I don’t recommend the latter as it can distract you from your content. Don’t be shy.

You’ve come up with the ideas, you’ve put your writing style and you polished it until you think it is proper to show it to the outer world. The devil is in the details. So do it properly.

Using a spellchecker makes you a productive writer. Spellchecking will be faster than doing it yourself. Your spellchecker will likely detect errors you missed. It also provides insights into your writing and enhances it. Writers who don’t want to correct their writing with a spellchecker are sloppy writers. After all the effort they put into it, they’re not able to do it properly until the last keystroke!

You’re efficient

Once you start using a spellchecker, you’ll want to know the best spellchecker on the market. I hate to break it down to you… But, no spellchecker is the best in the market. That’s an illusion! The best spellchecker is the one that is right for you. To find it, you’ll have to test several spellcheckers, put them to trial and error and select the best spellcheckers for your writing needs. To help you:

LanguageTool

  • Proficient: It is not the best spellchecker in the market but it’s trying.
  • Light proofreading: It offers and it is decent for spellchecking grammar and punctuation.

For:

  • Proficient writers: You can catch the tiny mistakes before sending a mail.
  • Students: You never understood the basics of English grammar but still don’t want to appear as a complete fool.

Of course, you know English, you speak English every day. But Language is a tool, so use your grammar correctly.

Grammarly

  • User-friendly: When you use Grammarly, you use a package.
  • Full proofreading: Check your English grammar, punctuation, and style. Then, play with the length of your sentences and try the synonyms function. Finally, check a few details like plagiarism and format your citations in APA, MLA, and Chicago style and your tone. Fluent, clear, and engaging.

For:

  • Professionals
  • Students
  • Businesses

No need to say more. Ah, yes…

Come to think of it, it can be annoying. As a perfectionist writer, I tend to polish my piece until the color gauge is full. How excruciating to figure out why my writing is not clear enough? Or is engaging enough? Ah! And finally, I come to understand I am just trying to please an algorithm!

QuillBot:

  • Best spellchecker for paraphrasing

For:

  • Writers in need of inspiration
  • Students in need of guidance

You know when you have this word on the tips of your tongue and you just keep blurting it? You ask all your friends, you put its definition online, you’ll check a ton of websites, and people and you’ll rack your brain on it. At some, you’ll either go crazy or surrender to your sloppy memory. Ah, forget about it, it’s nothing. Really… You’ll try to persuade yourself you’ll find the word later and end with a bitter taste. To cure this state, use Quillbot. Put the definition of this word and find it instantly. Even better, you’ll end up trying its paraphrase potential and come up with an even better word. Like, this word! It’s exactly the one I had in mind! You don’t fool anyone… It was not!

You’re smart…

Plus, as you’re smart, you’ll use the free version.

Free spellcheckers are tailored for light proofreading. Usually, premium errors tend to be picky ones and styles. So if you only want to correct grammar and spelling mistakes, the free version got you covered!

Besides, using the free version, some spellcheckers will highlight the errors detected by the premium and paid versions. Be smart, correct the ones that seem blatant.

TIP: Free spellcheckers are usually open source so you can access the code and create your own grammar rules, you can also disable rules and tailor your spellchecker to your needs. Your spellchecker becomes an extension of your writing.

And sneaky!

Once you chose your spellchecker, you’ll never want to break up with it. You’ll need it for all your writing. Integrate it into all your favorite apps!

Integrate it on your browser thanks to the browser extension. The most powerful spellcheckers have an addon for Chrome, Thunderbird, and Outlook… and even Opera! Stay professional at all times.

And adapt, and integrate it into your smartphone to never make a mistake on the go. Let’s face it… autocorrect is a mess. Autocorrect needs a spellchecker! So be sneaky and use both to write perfectly faster than thunderstrike!

Don’t keep this gem of technology for yourself, integrate it into your children’s tablets. It’ll help them learn English grammar, or at least pay attention to it. As a good parent, I teach my children to use grammar correctly! What about you?

You’re up to the challenge

Spellcheckers don’t correct your mistakes by themselves. You don’t just click on a button and all your writing is corrected in a second. That would be astonishing, would it? But spellcheckers are not magical sadly! Yet! Yes, they put a spell on you. Yes, they check your writing. But they couldn’t do it without you. You check on them too. You are the actor of your writing. You decide on the right correction, you choose to correct one phrase or not, and you are the leader of your writing. It’s up to you! The clock is ticking. Your mission, if you accept it, is to click on the correct suggestion. Choose wisely!

By doing so, by clicking each time on the correct answer, your brain unconsciously learns and integrates this new information, this spelling, or this grammar point. At last, without noticing, you’ll become better, and you’ll improve your writing, your spelling, and your English grammar. And you won’t use your spellchecker as often as you used to. You’ll become an English master! But stay wary.

Don’t make the mistake of blindly trusting your spellchecker. It’ll cheat on you. So keep your eyes open. As spellcheckers are not magic, they’re humans… Sort of. And spellcheckers make mistakes. Or they miss your mistakes. So are you up to the challenge?

Tip: Spellcheckers tend to miss capitalized nouns, proper nouns, and trademarks. Your spellchecker cannot know the name of your mother, your child, your dog, or your business if you don’t spell it to him! Spellcheckers are not mindreaders…

Not yet!

Finally, use a spellchecker for FUN. Grammar checking doesn’t have to be a dirty chore. Can you spot mistakes faster than your spellchecker? Did you already spot a mistake made by your spellchecker? No… So let’s play! ;)
