You may or may not be surprised to learn I’m an introvert — depending on how well you know me. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more I enjoy than having a laugh with my friends, but attending writing conferences and book events used to bring me out in a cold sweat.

Misunderstood

You’ll easily recognize introverts at house parties — they’re the ones making friends with the owner’s dog. Or you’ll see us at outdoor events, staring off into the distance or admiring the shape of the clouds. We are often misunderstood. Being an introvert doesn’t mean I’m shy or dislike people, it just means I’m out of my comfort zone in large crowds and my social battery depletes fast. All introverts are not created the same. For me, if I’m attending a social event then I need a glass or two of wine in order to be able to join in. Otherwise, I’ll feel socially awkward, self-conscious, or bored. Small talk is torture for introverts. We’d much prefer deep and meaningful conversations.
