If you’re hoping to write and publish a book then I recommend that you get in the mindset of making money from your writing. Not only will this earn you some income, it will showcase your work and build up your author platform, which is important when it comes to publishing your book.

Making Money

You don’t have to publish a whole novel to make money. There are other options open in the meantime. Short story writing is a great way of dipping your toe into the water and there are plenty of magazines willing to pay freelance writers. If you’re a newbie, it’s a brilliant way of honing your writing without the daunting task of six months of work ahead. I have published short stories in several magazines and got paid for them all. Buy a stack of magazines and contact the editor who publishes similar stories to the ones you’d like to write. Read their publication guidelines and don’t forget to include a brief cover letter.
