One reason I started a podcast in my 40s and maybe why you SHOULD, too.

Podcasts are everywhere. Apple even has a separate app for it called “Podcasts.”

You hear it blaring from the car next to you as both wait at the red light, everywhere from the suburbs of Los Angeles to the five boroughs of New York.

Many of these podcasts are about making money because everyone’s looking for a side hustle. Who can blame them? Inflation is high (I don’t care what the latest CPI shows), and so are rent and mortgage rates.

I got my mind on my money and money on mind.

And starting a podcast — technically speaking, is quite easy.

Hardware— all you need are the following:

  • A brain
  • Samson Q2U mic
  • Laptop/Computer (w/ a built-in webcam)

Software:

  • Riverside.fm (or Streamyard or Squadcast)

With Riverside.fm you can even edit or have them edit your episode for you with something called Magic Clips.

I digress.

Why start a podcast? For the money? Yes, I hope. I’m not impervious to the rising cost of living in sunny California.

For the fame? No. I don’t find significance in being known.

Then why?

It’s never one reason. But I came to a realization at dinner with a couple of friends. In between bites of the greasy (yet oh-so-delicious) bloomin’ onions — I had an epiphanic moment.

Sometimes, when people speak to me, certain words just stick out and, hence, stick with me. And I can’t recall if my friend said the word or it just popped into my head, but the word was — calling.

I’m 44. Yet, I feel the pressure of time coming to an end, and I’m not at peace for ONE reason:

I don’t think I’ve realized my potential because I’m not sure if I’m living the life I was designed to live.

Are we supposed to have a specific vocational calling? I’m not sure.

So that’s why I started a podcast. To ask people I’ve met (many of whom are older) who are in “Act Two” of their lives. How did they know they were doing what they were designed to do? Can they earn a living following their call? Should they follow their call when they have a family to take care of?

As you can see, I have more questions than answers.

But what if — through these interviews, I can find my calling or at least confirm my calling.

The best part of doing a podcast?

I get to leave a collection of interviews, stories, and tips for my children — so that they, too, can find their calling in life.
