Laying your cards on the table

Menu

I’m positive on Storyteller Tactics. I love the design, the system, the way you can zero in on a compelling story to tell, one that illustrates the message you want to convey and one that engages and holds the reader’s interest.

Other eyes, other views, other impressions are always worthwhile, just to get a full picture, maybe touch on points that are being overlooked or embellished.

Here are a handful of reviews that aren’t from Pip Decks, who manufactures and sells the cards.

Minimal Goods

A look at three decks, mainly Workshop Tactics. This guy speaks from experience in using these in actual work situations.

Includes a video review:

Their systemized approach to running workshops is the standout feature of these decks and the video walkthroughs are icing on the cake. My confidence in being a facilitator has increased by leaps and bounds since I made the purchase.

Gannon Meyer

Gannon, marketing coach, gives a video presentation. Very “markety” and although he claims he used the Storyteller Tactics deck in drafting his presentation, I couldn’t find any actual stories.

What he does very well is to run through a few of the cards, showing how the process works, highlighting important sections, and tying them all together.

I would downplay his advice to avoid reading books and doing courses on storytelling and rely entirely on the cards. The cards don’t actually contain anything new about stories but what they do well is provide a framework to be sure of telling a story relevant to your need.

Murdock Media

Alan Murdock claims that he is all about telling stories and he embraces Storyteller Tactics heartily. He has a solid background in video production and advertising.

The deck is built to influence, educate, build awareness, lead — to basically attain all the big objectives businesses struggle with on a day to day basis — through powerful, well-placed stories.

I especially like his company catchphrase: “Let’s tell your story”. Alan Murdock has his eye firmly on the ball.

Ben Hutton

Ben is a JSON Schema Dev — whatever that may be at home — but his voice is probably the most authentic I’ve yet found and his affiliate link was the one I chose when I went to buy my own cards.

My motivation is primarily to share something I feel was impactful and helpful, AND to practice better storytelling and writing in general. But also, I want you to feel the self improvement I did when using these cards.

Open your eyes

A lot of the links you will find when you go hunting for reviews lead back to Pip Decks or the card deck’s designer, Steve Rawling. I think they are very positive on their own product and they give you a shipload of information but well, you aren’t going to get any negatives from them, now are you?

These cards are pricey. Not quite an impulse buy unless your boss is footing the bill and while Pip Decks gives various guarantees it’s always good to be assured of a positive outcome before laying down the dollarbucks.

If someone is having regrets or they aren’t getting the job done, I don’t want to be in the same boat. I want to dodge that bullet.

The reviews above are the result of a pretty solid search. All positive — and all pushing affiliate links at you — and if they mention a downside, it’s the price.

The real value isn’t in the cards — excellent though they are — it’s in the resources behind the cards.

If you buy the cards, it’s like learning a language by thumbing through a grammar book and reading the short conversations about ordering bier und kaffee in a bar or buying a new lightbulb to make your auto hell damit.

The resources in the Vault show you how to speak the language like a native. None of the reviewers above do more than touch on the extra resources. In the weeks to come I’ll be reviewing the whole product including the videos and the templates and the downloads.

So stick around. I’ll tell you a few stories along the way. Bank on it!

My review series is free. I explore the cards, the systems, the tactics, link to independent reviews, and even show you how to get every word, every diagram, every dot point on every card for free, without paying a cent, with the blessing of the firm.

I believe in these cards. They are the wisdom of storytellers, passed on from ages past. The tactics work. They are a secret guide in the palm of your hand, and while they are expensive, they come with a money-back guarantee.
