It’s been three months since I started consistently creating. In that time I’ve written and published roughly forty pieces. Some of them have done quite well. The real challenge, however, has been generating new and compelling ideas.

Here are 4 no-nonsense methods to keep the ideas flowing, whatever your creative domain.

1. Walking

‘All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking’ — Nietzsche

Some of my most creative times are when I am out and about walking, mentally gnawing on some problem or another. It is my go-to solution when sitting down and working directly on the problem is not making headway.

The key is for the walk to be unstructured. You don’t want to be walking towards anything in particular; you are strolling around your neighbourhood, or in nature, and like your body, your thoughts will flow. It is almost as if you are in dialogue with the problem itself; it looms in your head and you are giving it some unstructured time to breach the surface in whatever way it might.

Think of the walk like you have a jumbled ball of yarn in your head that needs to be gradually unspooled.

2. Consume the best work
