The Secret Life of a Freelance Grant Writer

A few years ago, amid the craziness of COVID, I made the bold decision (got laid off) to leap into full-time freelancing. The world felt heavy and fragile, and I felt helpless. Nonprofits and small organizations — many lifelines for their communities — struggled to survive, and I felt an undeniable pull to help. The problem was I didn’t know where to start.

Having spent my career in the nonprofit sector, this shift was an extension of my purpose. It wasn’t just a job change but a way to channel my skills and passion into something that mattered, even as everything around me seemed to unravel.

Since then, the world has begun to stitch itself back together, unevenly and most certainly imperfectly. And in my own way, so have I. Each challenge and triumph has shaped me into someone braver and more resourceful than I ever thought I’d become.
