What Happened to Coffee Times?

A follow-up on the dissolution of one of the fastest-growing publications

I’ve been away a lot the last couple of months. As I’m in the thick of finishing up my PhD thesis, I’ve stepped back from social media and my online presence to focus on that work. So I’m probably the last to hear about all the Medium drama, from the new Membership stars to the mobile app adding back editing, and now… this.

I was shocked to learn recently that Coffee Times, once a large, vibrant, and thriving online community, has shut down. I wrote a few stories for them when I was more active here and always found the editors and the community to be respectful, welcoming, and professional, which makes the sudden closure due to homophobia and hate speech, of all things, quite disturbing.

What happened?

In late July, an article titled “Why I Hate the LGBTQ Community” was published by Coffee Times. Immediately, it was met with disgust from readers, many of whom reported the article for anti-LGBTQ hate speech.

According to Sally Prag, who read the article while it was up, it “read like some unintelligent, whining kid with far too much self-importance and a severe case of paranoia,” containing “poor grammar,” “an…
