Why Do Some People Dislike Non-Native Writers On Medium?

The world’s acceptance of English as a global link language should be cause for celebration

I am a non-native English writer living in India. I wrote this story more out of anguish than because I felt any deep resentment towards anybody. This is not a rant against any group of people. Most native speakers of English on Medium not only support and encourage non-natives, but they also make our lives easier by actively reading our stories and responding creatively and constructively.

But it’s no secret that a tiny minority exists on Medium that has no love lost for the non-native writers. I wanted to write this story after coming to know how the pub ILLUMINATION came under vicious attack on social media. Some people launched personal attacks on its founder, Dr Mehmet Yildiz.

I understand one of the reasons for their dislike towards ILLUMINATION and criticism towards its founder is the pub encourages non-native writers to be brave and tell their stories.

The pub’s avowed goal is to be inclusive and to encourage diversity. Many editors of this pub help these ESL…
