Jimmy Donaldson, or “Mr. Beast” is a YouTuber with over 121 million combined subscribers across all of his channels. That’s not bad for a 23 year old who dropped out of college. He got popular by making outrageous videos usually giving away immense amounts of money. But how did he get to where he is exactly?
- You Gotta Spend Money to Make Money
Mr. Beast is known for giving large sums of money to people for videos, but why, and where did this start? He has stated that ever since he gave $10,000 to a homeless man for a video that he was hooked on giving away money. He got the money from a brand deal, and spent it all on that video. But wait a minute. Most YouTubers who get money from brand deals like that especially when they’re not that well off keep the money, and are reluctant to spend it, especially not just giving it all away. It seems stupid to give away 10 grand like that. But that’s just it.
That video got almost 10 million views and it came out in 2017. His videos now get more than 5 times that. By taking risks like spending the brand deal money he gets all on 1 video, he creates content that you have to click on. Who wouldn’t see the title, “Last To Take Hand Off $1,000,000 Keeps It” and click on it? By spending most of the money he makes he can assure fast growth. He practically popularized giving money to people for YouTube videos and that has even become his brand.
You might be thinking, “He just has money to give away, and that’s why he gets views.” But, Mr. Beast has made a formula on how to spend his money, and make a clickable video. He can make a successful video no matter the budget.
2. Unique Ideas
As a YouTuber, you have to get people to click your videos or no one will ever see them. This makes the thumbnails and titles of your videos very important. Mr. Beast has said that he spends a lot of time on thumbnails, even making 2–3 for each video and changing them if the video isn’t performing how he wants it to.
Let’s go back to when Mr. Beast first started to blow up. What if I told you he could get millions of views back then without giving away any money? This is simply because he had good ideas and knew what people wanted to see. Let’s take a look at some of his older videos. “Counting to 100,000”, “Watching It’s Everyday Bro for 24 Hours.” These are ideas that anyone can do as long as you have the time, it’s completely free. He knows that people would love to see him waste a lot of time doing something, like watching paint dry. That’s what Mr. Beast does great, make videos that people have to click on whether or not he has $0 or $1,000,000. He said he used to spend an hour a day just brainstorming by usually looking through a dictionary and finding interesting words to be inspired by. And that definitely paid off.
3. Expand, Expand, Expand.
Mr. Beast is still growing at crazy rates on all 6 of his channels. He recently purchased a $10 million warehouse to improve the rate at which he makes videos. That seems absolutely insane, but it makes sense. As I mentioned, Mr. Beast doesn’t have just one channel, or one platform even. His whole business model is to make as much money as possible and put it back into his videos.
By making different channels, like “Mr. Beast Gaming”, “Mr. Beast Reacts” or even his new Spanish channel where his videos are dubbed over in Spanish to reach a new audience. He doesn’t want to stop at just his main channel or just YouTube. He has a very successful TikTok because he knows the value in it. He has a fast-food chain. That’s right, a YouTuber has his own fast-food chain. He’s even made apps like finger on the app which has had around a million downloads.
Mr. Beast is always growing, changing, and improving his videos. Whether that’s hiring a whole team of editors and cameramen, or renting out a football stadium, he will continue to be very successful with whatever thing he branches out to next. That is why Mr. Beast will become the biggest YouTuber ever.
