Your Readers Are Selfish — Use That To Become a Better Writer

It’s never about the writer, it’s about the reader.

(But not all of them)

Readers are all about what’s in it for them. They don’t care about what you have to offer, they care about what they have to gain.

What does that mean for your content? It means you should tailor your language to communicate what they actually want to hear, and that’s by answering one simple question:

  • What’s in it for me? [I’ll use WIIFM moving forward]

WIIFM is drastically important in the realm of copywriting. It helps us sell and persuade customers to take action.

Imagine a kid calling his friends on the phone:

“Guys! I just bought a new gaming computer! Tomorrow we can play squads in Fortnite!!!”

That’s how a real kid thinks. That’s a genuine reaction of excitement.

Now imagine if they reacted something like this:

“Guys! I just bought the new RTX4080 along with a 27” LED 240 Hz curved display!!!”

You’ll never see a kid be this technical. Why? Because they're kids, they don’t care about the technical stuff.
