First-ever light-emitting “smart tattoos” developed by Scientists

Smart wearable devices have become the new rage in the field of Healthcare. Emerging tech has enabled scientists to come up with new ways to incorporate it into innovative devices, which can be used to monitor the health of individuals. One such example is the stamp-sized skin patch about which I wrote recently. The device acts as an all-in-one wearable health monitor.

In the latest research, scientists have employed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to create temporary tattoos, which have a variety of use cases. OLED technology has been used in new-age TVs & smartphone screens. Tattoos, on the other hand, have been used as a form of art, expression & fashion. Combining them both, researchers at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology) have created a new type of “smart tattoo” with a range of potential use cases.

The technique used is similar to water transfer tattoos. Only in this case, the OLEDs are fabricated onto temporary tattoo paper and transferred to a new surface by being pressed onto it and dabbed with water…
