After a Good Friday closure, Wall Street ended the holiday-shortened week on Thursday with losses amid continued volatile trading, a recent trend. The S&P 500recorded its seventh negative week in the last nine, as negative sentiment from tariff developments persisted. Following adjustments to tariff policy the previous week, the focus shifted to positive trade negotiation remarks from President Trump and other U.S. officials regarding various countries, excluding China.

The U.S.-China trade war intensified as Nvidia and AMD disclosed anticipated costs from U.S. export controls on certain products to China. This news and weak quarterly bookings from ASML triggered a tech sell-off that significantly contributed to the week’s overall market decline. Concerns voiced by a hawkish Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the Economic Club of Chicago also weighed on the market.
