Intellia Therapeutics announces CRISPR Gene-Editing Breakthrough

CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, which is a little too complex to understand unless you are an expert from the field. Simply put, a CRISPR tool acts like a pair of DNA scissors to cut a defective gene & replace it with a healthy gene strand. Scientists around the world have been using the futuristic tool with high levels of success for the past few years. The first successful trials in the U.S, however, were reported back in 2019.

Critics have pointed out that the cut and paste of genes is pretty invasive & have been working on developing a benign version of this treatment. Retron Library Recombineering (RLR) is one such alternative developed by Harvard researchers recently. Coming back to CRISPR, Intellia Therapeutics — a U.S based biotech company, which specializes in gene-editing tech is now reporting the first-ever systemic delivery in a human body.
